The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is pleased to open registration for the Alexandria Animal Shelter Summer Camp. Each camp is one week long (Monday through Friday) from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (*except Class #1 for rising 1st and 2nd graders) at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter in Alexandria, Virginia.

Classes will focus on inspiring compassion for all living things, promoting the welfare of all animals, and encouraging responsible pet ownership. Children will have opportunities for hands-on learning with animals, assist with promoting specific animals for adoption and learn from special workshops by our veterinarian, our animal control officers, wildlife rehabilitators and more!

In addition, AWLA will be offering an additional 'lunch bunch' from 12pm to 1pm for camp weeks 2 through 7, which allows campers to enjoy a packed lunch from home with their new camp friends in a relaxed shelter environment, under supervision with spontaneous entertainment or enrichment as needed (please note food will not be provided).

****Please note that you must provide an email address where we can send, in the next few weeks, additional forms for you to complete and return before the first day of camp. You must complete these forms for your child to attend Camp.  We will not provide refunds except in cases of serious emergencies.  If the class does not fill up, we may cancel the camp course.

AWLA Counselor Lana Larson Gets Her "Hands On" New Camp Curriculum

The new camp counselor for this season's AWLA Animal Shelter Summer Camp is all about teaching through immersed experience, and loves to use her creativity to create new and unusual learning scenarios for her charges. She's full of ideas about how to bring summer campers closer to Alexandria's Animals, and is using the last days before camp begins to finesse a new curriculum that includes hands-on interactions with dogs, cats, small animals, and reptiles; discussions with Animal Services officers, and veterinary professionals, and the chance to name a shelter animal.
Lana Larson comes to AWLA from Florida with both animal sheltering education and experience.  Prior to her move to Virginia, Lana managed the volunteer program at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast where she gained an in-depth working knowledge of the the animal sheltering world. Before switching to animal welfare, Lana was a fourth-grade teacher where she brought hands-on learning into the classroom on a daily basis. Examples of how Lana has created these experiences include the year that she transformed the four walls of her classroom into an Egyptian pyramid under an impending jewel heist (scientific gem identification), the back field into an archaeological dig (mathematical grids and coordinates) and turned a school auditorium into the Globe Theater (a Shakespearean production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream" - with 9 year olds!).
See you at camp!
